The temple was bedecked with lanterns for Buddha’s birthday (a date which varies with the lunar calendar, and also between countries).

Once the capital of Siam, compared in size and wealth to Louis XIV’s Paris, Ayutthaya was abandoned after the Burmese invasion of 1767, the ruined city slowly consumed by the jungle. Not until the 1950s did significant restoration work begin, with some delightful discoveries.
